If a kidney stone blocks the flow of urine through the ureter (the tube from the kidney to the bladder), it can cause severe pain called renal colic. This pain is usually felt in your lower back and side (between the ribs and the hip). If the stone moves into the ureter, you might also feel pain in your groin and have a strong urge to urinate. Men may feel pain in their testicles.

Renal colic happens because the blockage suddenly increases pressure inside the urinary tract. The pain comes in intense waves and doesn’t get better by changing position. Many people describe it as one of the most painful experiences—comparable to childbirth.

You might also have:

Feeling sick (nausea)
Vomiting
Blood in your urine (pink or red urine)
Pain or burning when you urinate
Fever

Important: Renal colic is a medical emergency. Contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital for pain relief. If you have a high fever, get immediate medical help.
